Washington DC places and views worth saving

Lincoln Memorial columns

We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous view of the Lincoln Memorial columns. I love how the low angle makes the corner stretch right up into the sky.

Try looking up from the walkway for your own photo. You don’t need to copy the ledge pose to capture those towering columns.

cherry blossoms by the water

How pretty is this? Pink blossoms hang over the Tidal Basin path with the Washington Monument peeking up in the distance.

The golden color on the water makes the view even lovelier.

If blossoms are high on your list, check the seasonal bloom updates before choosing your dates. This isn’t a view you’ll find year-round.

Georgetown waterfront stroll

If you are looking for a break from the big landmarks, this one is for you. Boats line the Georgetown waterfront beside a walkway filled with bright pink hanging flowers.

Leave a little time to wander here rather than treating it as another quick photo stop. I especially love the bridge view at the end.

planes above the gallery

The aviation fans are going to love this! Planes hang overhead while more aircraft fill the gallery below.

There’s plenty to look at before you even get to the individual displays.

Make an aviation museum part of your itinerary if this is your kind of stop. Check the current galleries when planning rather than expecting every aircraft in this photo to be on display.

the Capitol up close

This Capitol view may just be one of my favorites here. I love the rows of columns beneath the huge white dome.

The people beside the steps really show you how big the building is.

Start with an exterior visit if you want to keep things simple. For a tour inside, check the current booking details separately.

Library of Congress details

I am obsessed with this reading room. The curved rows of desks, glowing lamps and decorated arches are absolutely gorgeous.

Add the Library of Congress to your list if you love an ornate interior. Check visitor access before going, since seeing the reading room doesn’t mean you can wander between these desks.

a bike outing near the Mall

Want to work a bike outing into your trip? This picture gives you a lovely starting point, with the Washington Monument reflected in the pool behind the bicycle.

Plan your ride around permitted cycling routes and walk your bike where required. Stop for the view rather than trying to recreate the pose while moving.

a Union Market food break

Don’t want every stop to be a museum or monument? No problem!

Make room for Union Market. The orange awnings and outdoor tables give this entrance such a cheerful look.

Browse the current food options before settling on lunch. If the weather suits, you could take your break outside.

evening at the Wharf

I love this waterfront view with its rows of boats and curved glass buildings. That bright golden reflection on the right is so pretty against the pink sky.

Try an evening walk at the Wharf if you want to end your sightseeing by the water. You can enjoy the marina view without making a boat trip part of the plan.

a paddle with a bridge view

If you’re looking for something a little more active, save this kayaking idea. A red tandem kayak sits on the water with an arched bridge and autumn trees ahead.

Check local rental options, conditions and paddling guidance before heading out. Keep a properly fitted life jacket on your packing checklist.

a quiet visit to Arlington

Rows of white headstones stretch beneath pink blossoms in this view of Arlington National Cemetery. This is a place to slow down and make space for remembrance.

If you include a visit, follow the cemetery’s visitor guidance and keep your voice low. Give services and anyone paying their respects plenty of privacy.

Washington National Cathedral

If you love intricate buildings, then this one is for you. Washington National Cathedral has pointed arches, tall towers and a beautiful circular window above the entrance.

Take time to look at the exterior details too. There’s so much here that a single straight-on photo would miss.

fall neighborhood walks

This is another pretty way to spend part of your day without adding a big attraction. I love the rounded house fronts and orange leaves along this sidewalk.

Choose a neighborhood walk if you’re visiting in fall. Keep your exploring on public sidewalks and leave residential steps clear.

the Washington Monument after dark

The Washington Monument looks so different at night, doesn’t it? Its bright reflection stretches down the dark water with the moon shining off to one side.

Save a monument walk for after dark if your schedule allows. Stick to open, well-lit routes rather than expecting every daytime path to be accessible.

the elephant in the rotunda

How striking is this elephant display? The raised trunk reaches toward the upper level of the National Museum of Natural History’s rotunda.

If you’re choosing a museum for your itinerary, this is a lovely place to start. Pick a few exhibits that interest you rather than rushing to see everything.

produce stalls at Eastern Market

I love this market scene with its stacked fruit and long row of hanging lights. Bananas, pears and bright oranges fill the foreground beneath the high ceiling.

Make an Eastern Market browse part of your day if you enjoy food stops. You could choose a little fruit for later rather than planning another sit-down meal.

the Capitol from across the pool

This is another Capitol view, but it’s a little different from the close-up above. The equestrian statue sits in front of the dome with blue water stretching across the foreground.

Try this wider view if you want the grounds in your photos too. I’d keep the pool in the frame.

a panda stop at the zoo

How adorable is this panda holding onto the tree? Its black-and-white face peeks between the branches with rocks and logs below.

If pandas are on your wish list, check the National Zoo’s current visit details and animal updates. Leave room for a little patience rather than expecting this exact close-up.

flowers around an indoor fountain

If you love a garden stop, this picture is full of inspiration. Yellow flowers, white orchids and leafy plants surround a narrow blue pool beneath a glass roof.

Consider a conservatory visit, such as the U.S. Botanic Garden, for your itinerary.

Check its current displays rather than counting on this exact flower-and-fountain arrangement.

rooftop drinks with a view

Last but definitely not least, we have this rooftop sunset view. I love the pale orange sky behind the Capitol dome!

The high stools and narrow counter leave the skyline in full view.

Look for a rooftop spot with a Capitol-facing outlook if you want a similar evening. Check reservations and access rules before making it your final stop.
