These pictures offer plenty of inspiration. Some locations aren’t confirmed, so the suggested destinations aren’t always the places pictured.

Seaside Stops, Pretty Streets and Outdoor Ideas
white trim and a flower-filled porch
We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous porch. I love the tall white columns, green shutters and red flowers along the front.
There’s so much to look at before you even reach the door.
Cape May is a lovely choice if you want to spend an afternoon admiring old houses. Plan a stroll along public sidewalks and enjoy the porch details without stepping onto private properties.

a waterfall tucked into the trees
How pretty is this narrow waterfall? The water drops between dark rock walls with greenery growing all around it. I love the little pool at the bottom.
Want a waterfall on your New Jersey itinerary? Look into Buttermilk Falls in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
Choose an open viewing route and leave a little time to enjoy the wooded surroundings.
a little art-window browsing
If you are looking for something simple to plan, a downtown stroll is a lovely place to start. The hanging ART sign, brick storefronts and leafy sidewalk make this street especially inviting.
Try Lambertville for an art-focused afternoon. Leave your plans loose enough to browse a gallery or stop for lunch when something catches your eye.
Asbury Park by the water
I am obsessed with the pink sky behind Asbury Park’s Convention Hall. The illuminated entrance and the colors reflected on the wet sand are so pretty together.
Make the waterfront your main stop if you want a beach outing with architecture to look at too. You don’t need to fill every hour with an activity.
a long beachfront boardwalk
Want a beach day with a walk built in? This long boardwalk, broad stretch of sand and little gazebo offer plenty of inspiration. The photograph appears to show Rehoboth Beach in Delaware, not New Jersey.
Try Ocean City’s boardwalk for your New Jersey outing instead. Pair a walk beside the beach with a lunch stop, then decide whether you feel like spending the rest of the afternoon on the sand.
pink blossoms along the path
These pink blossoms may just be one of my favorite details on this list. I love how the branches spread over the path with fallen petals scattered across the grass.

Put Sayen House and Gardens in Hamilton on your spring outing list if you love garden walks. Check what’s blooming before choosing a date if flowers are the main reason you’re going.
a tower and a tiny balcony
Who else would stop to look at this house? The tall central tower, arched windows and tiny white balcony are gorgeous.
That patterned porch railing is another lovely detail.
Let this inspire a historic-house visit. The Emlen Physick Estate in Cape May is a separate option to look into if you’d like to build your afternoon around a house tour.
Barnegat Lighthouse by the inlet
We have another beautiful waterfront stop here, but this time there’s a red-and-white lighthouse above the rocks. Barnegat Lighthouse is such a striking part of this view.
I’d start with a walk along the designated waterfront route. You can make the lighthouse the focus of your afternoon without planning a climb.
a giant emerging from the grass
Is that an enormous hand reaching out of the ground? This sculpture goes all out with oversized fingers, a reclining face and an arm reaching into the sky.
If this has you in the mood for outdoor art, try Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton. That’s a separate destination suggestion, not the confirmed home of this giant.
Give yourself time to see the artworks from more than one angle.
a quieter boardwalk walk
Don’t want to plan your day around rides or shopping? No problem!
Take inspiration from this simple boardwalk scene with sand on one side and benches on the other. I love the long shadows across the boards.
Spring Lake’s boardwalk is an option for that kind of outing. Keep the plan simple with a walk and a pause to look out at the water.
a Statue of Liberty view
If you love a waterfront view, this one is for you. The Statue of Liberty rises across the water with a viewing telescope beside the railing.
Try Liberty State Park for a New Jersey statue-view outing. A shoreline walk can be the whole plan.
Visiting Liberty Island is a separate trip that needs its own ferry arrangements.
Paterson’s waterfall and bridge
How gorgeous is this view of Paterson Great Falls? I love the arched bridge above the water and the steep rock walls on either side.
Make the falls your main stop rather than squeezing them into a packed schedule. Enjoy the water from open official overlooks instead of trying to reach the spot where this picture was taken.
Hoboken’s waterfront clock tower
This is another waterfront idea, but it’s a little different from the beach scenes above. The Erie Lackawanna lettering and tall clock tower make Hoboken Terminal worth a closer look.
Pair a look at the terminal with a public waterfront walk and lunch in Hoboken. The photograph shows the building from across the water, so your walking view will be different.
a red-topped lighthouse
I love this Cape May Point scene. The cream-colored lighthouse with its red top looks so pretty behind the boat and dune grass.
The large lettering on the boat is such a lovely detail.
Build your outing around Cape May Lighthouse and the surrounding state park. I’d leave time for a walk as well as a look at the tower.

sunflowers above your head
How cute is the giant height marker among these sunflowers? The yellow blooms reach well above the person standing beside it.
There’s no need for much else in a photo with flowers like these.
A New Jersey sunflower-maze visit would make a lovely seasonal outing. Pick a farm advertising current visitor dates and blooms, then enjoy the paths without assuming flower picking is included.
a pier full of color
If you want a beach outing with a little more going on, this amusement-pier scene is for you. Bright rides stretch out over the water with the boardwalk and tall buildings behind them.
This appears to be Atlantic City’s Steel Pier. Pair a visit during operating hours with a boardwalk stroll rather than packing several shore towns into the same day.
cranberry harvest colors
The red berries covering the water are such a striking sight. Workers stand in the flooded bog with long tools while tractors sit along the bank.
Look for an advertised public harvest event or guided bog visit in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens. This is a working agricultural scene, so enjoy it through an organized visit rather than entering a bog yourself.
a simple Sandy Hook beach day
Don’t want to go all out with a packed itinerary? Keep things simple with a Sandy Hook beach outing.
I love the blue inside this boat against its cream exterior and red lettering.
Choose a designated beach area and leave room for a shoreline walk. There’s no need to track down this particular boat to enjoy an afternoon by the water.

ivy and castle-like windows
This building may just be a favorite for architecture lovers. The steep roofline, tall projecting window and ivy-covered walls give you so many little details to notice.
Love the castle-like look? Lambert Castle in Paterson is another place to consider when visitor access is available.
I’d make an architecture stop the main event and leave the rest of the afternoon open.
a brick courtyard and teal doors
Last but definitely not least, we have this cute courtyard scene. I love the teal shutters and doors beside the red siding.
The little outdoor tables make the walkway feel especially inviting.
Historic Smithville is one option if this puts you in the mood for a New Jersey shopping-village afternoon. Browse a little, stop for something to eat and keep the rest of your plans flexible.
