These pictures give you plenty to plan around, whether you want a full day outside or a slower afternoon with nowhere else to be.
If your search for “weekend getaway ideas california” needs narrowing down, start with the scenery. You can keep things simple with one coastal town or plan your weekend around a mountain escape.

California getaway ideas worth saving
Big Sur bridge views
We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous view of Bixby Creek Bridge. I love the tall arch against the cliffs, with that bright blue ocean behind it.
Build your Big Sur weekend around coastal stops rather than a packed schedule. Check current road conditions first and use designated pullouts for your photos.

a vineyard afternoon
How pretty is this little table overlooking the vines? Two chairs, a bottle and rows of yellow-green leaves make a lovely starting point for a wine-country weekend.
For a Napa or Sonoma trip, look for a tasting reservation with an outdoor seating area. This is exactly the kind of view I’d want to linger over.
poolside desert architecture
I am obsessed with these curved windows. The turquoise pool and tall cacti look so good beyond the glass, especially with sunlight stretching across the floor.
If you’re planning Palm Springs, try making architecture part of the getaway. Look for a stay with design details you actually want to spend time enjoying.
storybook cottage details
This cottage may just be one of my favorite buildings here. I love the curved roof, tall chimneys and pale green gate beneath those enormous trees.
For a Carmel-by-the-Sea weekend, leave room for a walk to admire cottage exteriors. Keep your exploring on public paths rather than stepping through someone’s gate.

Lake Tahoe blues
Who wouldn’t stop to look at this water? The pale boulders show right through the turquoise shallows, with a paddleboard floating beside them.
Save this Lake Tahoe idea if you want your trip to revolve around the lake. If paddling is on your list, check wind and water conditions and wear a properly fitted life jacket.
red rooftops and palms
If you love wandering around town as much as visiting the beach, this is your kind of inspiration. White buildings, red roofs and tall palms fill the view, with mountains behind them.
Try a Santa Barbara weekend with time for architecture and a waterfront walk. You don’t have to squeeze both into the same afternoon.
a rugged coastal pause
Don’t want your beach weekend to be all about swimming? No problem!
This rocky shoreline has waves breaking around dark outcrops and a grassy edge behind a simple fence.
Use it as inspiration for a Mendocino coast escape. I’d choose a marked coastal walk and leave plenty of time to stop for the view.
a desert rock arch
How gorgeous is this arch? The person beneath it gives you a sense of just how large those rounded rocks are.
A Joshua Tree getaway is an option if this is the scenery you’re after. Plan your walk around the forecast, carry water and follow marked routes rather than treating the photo as a climbing guide.
pink skies and tall palms
I love this pink and purple sky behind the palm silhouettes. Even the parking area gets a pretty backdrop here!
For a Southern California town getaway, leave one evening open for a stroll around sunset. You can’t plan on these exact colors, but you can give yourself time to notice the sky.
Solvang’s windmill details
This windmill is just too cute. The white walls, blue doors and dark wraparound railing give you plenty to look at before you even step inside.
Make Solvang your starting point if you want a small-town weekend with distinctive buildings. Check current business listings before planning around the winery sign pictured here.
a mountain pool view
The mountain backdrop is my favorite part of this picture. There’s a small stone-edged pool in the foreground, open scrubland beyond it and a dog standing beside the person in the water.
If an Eastern Sierra soaking trip appeals to you, verify the specific pool’s access, water conditions and pet rules first. The photo alone doesn’t establish any of those.
Catalina harbor blues
Bring a little island scenery into your weekend with Avalon on Catalina. I am in love with the red-roofed Casino building beside all those boats.
Leave room in your plans for a harbor walk rather than rushing straight to the next activity. Check ferry schedules before booking your stay.
a tucked-away beach cove
If you are looking for dramatic beach scenery, then this is the inspiration for you. There are golden cliffs, turquoise waves and a rectangular pool right beside the sand.
For a Laguna Beach-style escape, choose a cove with verified public access. Check tides and local restrictions rather than assuming the pool or cliffside steps are open to visitors.
wine and yellow flowers
How cute is this wine-country photo? The bright yellow flowers almost fill the frame, with two raised glasses against a clear blue sky.
Try planning a friends’ getaway around a vineyard visit and a leisurely lunch. If you want flower-filled photos too, ask where visitors are allowed to walk and arrange transportation before tasting.
dinner beneath towering beams
This dining room is absolutely gorgeous. I love the high ceiling, rows of chandeliers and huge windows at the far end.
Use this as inspiration for a Yosemite lodge weekend with a sit-down meal included. Confirm the restaurant and reservation requirements separately rather than assuming a pictured dining room accepts walk-ins.
a snow-covered cabin
Want something completely different from the beach ideas? This dark cabin surrounded by snow-covered trees is a lovely place to start.
Look into a Big Bear or another mountain-town stay if you like this setting. Check the elevation and forecast when booking, since a cabin reservation doesn’t guarantee snow.
green hills in Paso Robles
Here is another wine-country idea, but the scenery is a little different. I love the vineyard rows running across these green slopes, with a big spreading tree in the middle.
Save Paso Robles for a weekend with a few planned tastings and time between them. There’s no need to turn every hour into another reservation.
a pie-centered town stop
Not gonna lie, that whole pie deserves a place in the weekend plans! The open box and bench make this a much simpler kind of getaway inspiration.
If you’re considering Julian, build in a bakery stop and some time around town. Choose your filling from the actual menu rather than guessing what’s beneath this crust.
Oceano’s rolling dunes
Don’t want another vineyard or mountain view? Try the Oceano Dunes area near Pismo Beach.
The smooth sandy ridges and trail of footprints are so pretty in this picture.
Check current access rules and designated walking areas before visiting. Bring water and follow posted guidance rather than heading toward an unfamiliar ridge just for a photo.

a walk among giant trees
Last but definitely not least, we have these enormous reddish trunks with sunlight coming through the forest. I love how small the person looks beside them.
If this is your favorite view, consider a Sequoia National Park getaway. Choose an established trail suited to your group and check current park conditions before setting out.
