Looking for japandi garden ideas with a little more than white gravel and a few plants? Think red-leaf trees, tall bamboo and a simple bench tucked beside the greenery.
These pictures give you plenty to work with, from small balcony displays to planted courtyards.
You can keep things simple or go bigger with a water feature. There are a few indoor and furniture references here too, with details you could adapt for your outdoor space.
Japandi garden inspiration worth saving
bamboo and pale gravel
We’re starting off strong with this pretty little courtyard. I love the tall bamboo in its round gray pot and the small dark planter sitting on a flat rock.
For a similar arrangement, leave some pale gravel showing between your pots. The stepping stones give you a lovely route through the middle.
a lantern among the rocks
How cute is this little lantern? The wide curved top and open center give you plenty to look at without adding bright colors.
If you’re choosing japandi garden decor, try one lantern among low plants and rocks like this. You don’t need a whole collection.
red leaves and a black screen
I am obsessed with these red leaves against the black slatted screen. The little round light above them is such a pretty extra detail.
Try a dark screen behind a favorite tree if you want a similar backdrop. Keep the planting around its base green to follow this combination.
a curved pebble bed
This tree may just be one of my favorites here. I love how the red foliage repeats in the low planting underneath.
Rounded gray pebbles follow the curved edge beside the paving. Borrow that curved outline if you want something different from a straight border.
a winding sculptural bench
Want your seating to look a little different? This long brown bench has sweeping curves and rows of narrow ribs running from the seat into the back.
It’s shown on a paved street rather than in a garden. For your own space, you could borrow the curved shape with a smaller outdoor bench beside a planting bed.
tall bamboo planters
If you love a garden full of green, this one is for you. Tall bamboo fills a row of long brown planters along the fence.
The square stepping stones beside the deck are a lovely detail too. Try a similar path if you want to connect a seating area with the rest of your garden.
stacked stones and moss
How sweet are these little stone stacks? I especially love the smaller one beside the moss-covered rocks.
The pale gravel winds around the planted islands rather than cutting straight through. You could borrow that winding layout without adding more ornaments.
a garden in a bowl
Don’t have room for a full garden? This bowl gives you a smaller idea to work with.
A tiny tree sits beside pebbles and curved lines in the pale sand.
I love that part of the bowl is left open. Keep that same little patch of sand if you want to try your own miniature arrangement.
a tree beside a window seat
This is an indoor space, but the tree and pale surroundings are lovely inspiration for a sheltered courtyard. The rough-edged planter sits beside a raised nook with beige cushions.

For an outdoor version, you could pair a broad, low planter with a simple bench. Choose plants and seating suited to your conditions rather than copying the indoor setup exactly.
green planting and dark pebbles
Who says you need flowers for a pretty garden? The broad leaves, ferns and airy tree branches give this narrow bed so much variety.
I love the large flat stepping stones among the dark pebbles. Keep those visible rather than filling every gap with plants.
raked gravel circles
If you’re drawn to traditional Japanese dry gardens, save this one. Long straight lines run through the pale gravel, with circles wrapping around the mossy rock groups.
You could borrow one small rock grouping and its surrounding rings for a simpler courtyard. There’s no need to recreate this entire space.
a cloud-shaped tree
I love the rounded green clusters on this tree. The winding trunk is just as pretty as the foliage.
This one is pictured in a nursery pot rather than a finished garden. You could use a similarly shaped tree as the main feature in a simple gravel bed, after checking its growing needs.

a stream beside the deck
This is one of my favorite layouts on the list. The water runs beside the decking, with bamboo in the foreground and a little waterfall farther back.
The potted red-leaf tree near the doorway is a lovely finishing touch. If a stream isn’t part of your plans, you could still borrow that planter placement.
wide steps and a red canopy
I am obsessed with this courtyard. The red-leaf tree in its round pot looks gorgeous beside the black dining chairs.
Wide rectangular stepping stones lead through pale gravel, with a long fountain on the left. Pick one of those features to start with if you’re working with a smaller space.
a lit gravel border
Don’t want to redo your whole lawn? No problem!
This narrow border keeps the planting along the wall, with pale gravel and a row of larger rocks at the edge.

The black post lights are my favorite detail. Rounded shrubs and spiky green clumps alternate between them, with a few purple flowers near the front.
a little balcony display
How cute is this balcony corner? A white lantern sits on a square brown stand, surrounded by black pots and pale pebbles.
Try varying the height of your planters to borrow this arrangement. The tall greenery at the back leaves room for the smaller pots in front.
a long bench under a tree
If you are looking for seating without lots of cushions or accessories, this one is for you. A long slatted bench stretches between low walls, with moss and rounded pebbles underneath.

I especially love the leafy shadows across the brown wall. There’s plenty to enjoy here without adding more decor.
oversized hanging globes
These hanging globes are so pretty! This is an indoor dining space, not a garden, but the mix of large and small round shades is worth saving.
For a covered outdoor seating area, you could try a smaller grouping of lights made for that location. Keep the pale colors if you like this look.
a wall full of ferns
Calling all greenery fans, this one has so much to love. Ferns fill the lower border and spill from planting pockets across the tall open framework.
You could borrow a single planted section for a smaller garden. I’d keep the narrow grass path clear beside it, just like this.
a pergola over a narrow path
Last but definitely not least, we have this pretty side courtyard. I love the overhead beams and the narrow slats casting shadows across the gray paving.
A simple bench sits against the house beside climbing greenery. Try keeping your seating along one wall if you want to leave the middle of a narrow space open.
