Looking for may vacation destinations in the us with a little variety? Think waterfall walks, bright city nights and an afternoon beside the ocean.

These ideas range from Yosemite’s waterfalls to Chicago’s river views, with plenty of flowers along the way.

You can keep your plans simple or build a trip around one favorite stop. Check seasonal conditions before booking, especially for blooms and mountain trails.

A few pictured locations still need confirmation, so treat those as inspiration rather than verified US stops.

May getaways worth saving

mossy branches and bright blooms

We’re starting off with these gorgeous red and pink flowers beneath sprawling branches. I love the long curtains of moss hanging above the grass.

For a garden-focused getaway, consider Charleston or Savannah. This particular garden isn’t identified, so choose your stops using local garden information and current bloom reports.

Yosemite Falls through the trees

How beautiful is this view? Yosemite Falls rises beyond a paved path framed by tall trees and low stone walls.

You don’t need much else in the picture!

May is worth considering for Yosemite’s waterfalls. Check current park access and trail conditions before deciding which walks to include.

pink flowers beside the pond

I am obsessed with those pink reflections. The flowering shrubs spill toward the pond, with a little bridge tucked behind them.

If you want a trip built around gardens, consider Wilmington, North Carolina. That’s a destination suggestion rather than an identification of this photo.

Check what’s flowering during your dates.

rows of red tulips

The red tulips and pink sky are so pretty together. I especially love the yellow flowers beside the red rows, with mountains stretching across the background.

Washington’s Skagit Valley is worth researching for tulip scenery like this. Its season usually centers on April, so check farm updates before planning a May trip around the flowers.

race day in Louisville

Want your vacation to revolve around an event? Churchill Downs in Louisville gives you a completely different option from the gardens above.

The twin spires rise over crowded stands as horses round the track.

The Kentucky Derby takes place in May. Check the year’s schedule and ticket availability before building your trip around it.

a boardwalk and striped lighthouse

This Outer Banks view may just be one of my favorites. I love the black-and-white bands on Bodie Island Lighthouse and the straight boardwalk running through the grasses.

Leave room for a lighthouse stop alongside your beach plans. If you’d like to climb it, check opening dates and ticket requirements first.

water between towering cliffs

Look at the height of those canyon walls! A person carrying an orange backpack wades through the water below them. This is adventure inspiration, not a simple stroll.

If this has you considering Zion’s Narrows, check seasonal closures and flash-flood guidance before planning a visit. Spring runoff can close the route.

The exact canyon pictured here remains unconfirmed.

green ridges above the beach

If you’re looking for beach inspiration, this one is hard to pass by. The leaning palms and steep green ridges are gorgeous above that curved shoreline.

Consider Kauai or Oahu for a Hawaii getaway with beaches and mountain scenery. This particular beach hasn’t been identified, so pick your stops from verified local information.

Nashville after dark

Don’t want your whole vacation to revolve around hiking? No problem!

Nashville gives you a very different direction. I love the glowing guitar beside the red-and-blue Crossroads sign.

Plan an evening around live music, then leave some daylight hours free to explore beyond the neon-lined blocks.

cacti and colorful flowers

How pretty are those purple flowers among the yellow and orange? The tall saguaro and rocky mountains give you plenty to look at beyond the blooms too.

Consider the Tucson area for desert scenery, but don’t count on finding this flower display in May. Bloom timing varies.

Plan for increasing heat and check local conditions before heading out.

a cove at sunset

I love this little beach beneath the cliffs. The sunset leaves a golden reflection along the shore, with tall palms silhouetted above it.

For a coastal city break, consider San Diego and the La Jolla shoreline. Leave an evening open for a waterfront walk instead of squeezing another stop into your schedule.

Double Arch near Moab

If you want big scenery without a city skyline, take a look at Double Arch in Arches National Park. Those enormous orange arches are gorgeous against the pale blue sky.

Consider Moab as your base. Check current park entry requirements before visiting and carry water for your outings.

vineyard rows and golden skies

These vineyard rows are so pretty beneath the golden sky. My favorite detail is the group of tall, narrow trees beside the tiled-roof house.

This scene resembles the Tuscan countryside and needs location verification before it can represent a US destination. For a US wine-country trip, consider Napa or Sonoma instead.

Neither is a confirmed match for this photo.

little lights along a forest path

Those little yellow lights look almost unreal against the dark green woods. I love how the path curves out of sight between the trees.

For a firefly-focused getaway, research the Great Smoky Mountains’ seasonal viewing information. Timing and access vary, so don’t assume a May visit will match this scene.

The image alone doesn’t verify its location or the display.

purple blossoms and a white steeple

How sweet is this street scene? Purple blossoms frame a white church, with bicycles lined up along the sidewalk.

Consider Mackinac Island if you like this kind of small-town scenery. Lilac displays there are often associated with June, so check bloom updates for a May visit.

This pictured street still needs location confirmation.

Chicago from the river

This is such a fun angle on Chicago. A red tour boat sits between tall buildings, with a low bridge just ahead.

I love how much of the skyline fills the view.

If your travel notes are headed “may vacation destinations usa,” give Chicago a spot for a city break. Try a river cruise with time for a Riverwalk stroll afterward.

peach walls and a garden path

The peach-colored walls and curved garden path are so pretty together. Those big striped leaves in the foreground are my favorite detail.

Consider Santa Fe or Taos if you’re drawn to this architectural style. The house itself isn’t identified, so don’t assume it’s a visitor attraction or somewhere you can book a stay.

blue water and stacked balconies

Don’t want to fill every day with activities? This poolside scene makes a good case for leaving an afternoon open.

I love the pale houses with stacked balconies overlooking the bright blue water.

For a similar setup, research vacation rentals with pool access. Confirm the property’s location and amenities rather than assuming this photo shows a particular resort.

Boston across the harbor

I love this Boston waterfront view as the building lights come on. A small boat crosses the harbor below the skyline, with a curving promenade in the foreground.

Pair a waterfront walk with one neighborhood outing rather than rushing across the whole city. Leave yourself a little time to enjoy the view.

river views and yellow flowers

Last but definitely not least, we have this gorgeous river landscape. The yellow flowers are my favorite detail, with grassy slopes dropping toward the blue water.

Consider the Columbia River Gorge for this kind of spring scenery. Check trail conditions and bloom reports before choosing a hike.

Stay on marked paths around the flowers.
