Looking for tropical vacation destinations with more than a pretty beach? Think green valleys, overwater stays and little harbors surrounded by mountains.
These pictures give you plenty to dream about, whether you want a beach-focused trip or a few days exploring away from the sand.
You can keep things simple or plan around a special outing. Start with the views you love most.
Not every location here is identified, so use those images as inspiration rather than confirmed places to book.
Tropical vacation views worth saving
an overwater stay
We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous overwater villa. I love the little pool on the lower deck and the clear turquoise water underneath.
There’s even a ladder leading down from the platform.
If an overwater stay is on your wish list, check the exact room category before booking. Save this picture for the deck setup alone!
a winding white sandbar
How gorgeous is this? The white sand curves through bright blue water toward a small island in the distance.
Two people near the foreground give you a sense of just how wide this stretch is.
If you’re considering a sandbar excursion, ask a local operator about tides and access rather than assuming it’s always above water.
green terraces and tall palms
Who says your whole trip has to revolve around the beach? These bright green terraces, tall palms and winding paths are such a pretty change of scenery.
I especially love the little stream running through the middle. Put a guided countryside walk on your list if this is the kind of view you’d like to explore.
a little rocky cove
If you’re looking for a beach with a little more scenery, this one is for you. Pale sand sits between large rocks, with palms leaning over the edges and turquoise waves rolling in.
The palm shadows across the foreground might be my favorite part. You don’t need a row of beach umbrellas to make a beautiful beach picture.
a boat beneath towering cliffs
I am obsessed with this cliffside view. The tall gray rock face rises straight above the turquoise water, with small patches of green tucked into the cracks.
A guided boat outing is worth considering if you want to see a coastline from this angle. Follow the crew’s seating instructions rather than copying the pose on the bow.
golden sand and leaning palms
This is actually one of my favorite beach views here. I love the golden-colored sand beside those clear blue shallows.
The leaning palms and little buildings tucked behind them make the shoreline even prettier.
If you prefer smaller beach stays, use this scene as inspiration when comparing locations.
green ridges under the clouds
Look at those mountain ridges! Deep folds of green rise behind a thin strip of beach, with low clouds hiding part of the peaks.
If your list of top tropical vacation destinations starts and ends with beaches, leave a little room for dramatic coastal scenery like this. I love the patches of reddish earth showing through the green.
pale blue water and rounded boulders
The rounded boulders are such a pretty detail in this beach scene. They stretch along the shoreline beneath dense palms, with pale blue water washing around the swimmer in front.
Save this one if you love a beach with a rocky backdrop. Just check local swimming conditions before heading into an unfamiliar cove.
a pool with an ocean view
Don’t want every day to involve an excursion? No problem!
This pool overlooks the sea, with white umbrellas and dark loungers arranged around its curved edges.
I love how you can see the little boats beyond the pool. When comparing hotels, look for photos of the actual pool area rather than relying only on close-up room pictures.
sharks in clear shallows
There’s more to this view than turquoise water. Several sharks are visible above the sandy bottom, with smaller fish scattered around the rocks.
If seeing marine life is part of your trip, choose a responsible wildlife operator. This photo doesn’t establish the species or whether entering the water would be safe.
a long-tail boat in the bay
How pretty is this long-tail boat? The colorful strips tied around its tall bow stand out against the green-blue water.
Those steep cliffs behind it are gorgeous too.
Save this as inspiration for a coastal boat trip. I’d leave time to enjoy the bay itself rather than filling the day with back-to-back stops.
a waterfall between dark rocks
This waterfall may just be one of my favorite inland views here. A narrow cascade drops between dark rock walls into a blue-green pool, with vines hanging down beside it.
The photo catches two people mid-jump, but that isn’t a reason to copy them. Enjoy a designated viewpoint and follow local guidance about water access.
a twisted tree by the sea
Don’t want a beach scene packed with buildings and loungers? This simple view is for you.
One broad tree stands on pale sand with a twisted trunk and a bright turquoise sea behind it.
I love how much character that one tree adds. It’s a lovely reminder to notice the smaller details along the shore.
sailboats at sunset
I am obsessed with this sunset view. Two sailboats sit just offshore while the low sun leaves a golden reflection across the water.
You could look into a sunset sailing trip, or simply find a permitted shore spot with a view like this. Either way, leave an evening open instead of rushing straight to dinner.
blue lights along the shoreline
How beautiful are those blue streaks against the dark beach? The bright specks along the water resemble bioluminescence, with a purple-orange glow still visible near the horizon.
If this is on your wish list, research locally documented viewing opportunities. Natural displays vary, so don’t plan around a promise that the beach will look exactly like the photo.
turquoise shallows from above
This is a completely different way to see the coast. White lines of surf surround turquoise shallows, with dark channels creating a waterfall-like pattern beneath the water.
I love the mountain rising from the green peninsula too. If you’re considering a scenic flight, check the route to see which coastal views it actually includes.
a colorful mountain harbor
If you like a little activity around your waterfront, this one is for you. Blue buildings, rows of sailboat masts and a red boat fill the harbor beneath a steep green peak.
The yellow boats along the dock are such a cute detail. Consider a harbor-based stay if you’d rather have a waterfront to explore than spend every day on the sand.
palms reflected in the shallows
I love this narrow strip of pale beach with its tall, leaning palms. Their reflections show up in the still-looking water along the edge.
There’s no need to add much to a view like this. Save it if a palm-lined shoreline is the first thing you picture when you think about an island trip.
a drive across blue water
Prefer a road trip to a boat outing? This Florida-labeled image offers a different kind of vacation inspiration, with two long bridges crossing bright turquoise water toward a low island.
I love the little palm-lined beach in the foreground. For a coastal drive, plan stops at designated viewpoints rather than stopping on a bridge to take pictures.
a beach beneath a green hillside
Last but definitely not least, we have this gorgeous curved beach. I am in love with the clear shallows!
Pale sand runs beneath a densely green hillside, with rounded boulders gathered near the far end.
The leaning palms finish the view beautifully. Save this one if your ideal beach has plenty of greenery behind it.
