Looking for the best places to travel for new years eve? Think fireworks over Sydney Harbour, confetti in Times Square or a night beside the beach.
These pictures give you plenty to dream about, from big city celebrations to snowy slopes.
You can keep things simple or go all out. If you’re narrowing down the best places to travel for nye, start with the kind of night you want.
Check current event details before booking: these images are inspiration, not confirmed schedules. A few locations also need checking.
New Year’s Eve destinations and scenes worth saving
Sydney Harbour fireworks
We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous Sydney Harbour view. The Opera House sits beside pink, gold and green fireworks, with crowds filling the space below.
If a waterfront countdown is your kind of night, put Sydney on your shortlist. Check the access rules for your chosen viewing area before making plans.
confetti in Times Square
How fun is this? Colorful confetti fills the air between the bright billboards of Times Square.
There’s so much going on before you even look up at the ball.
Choose New York if you’re drawn to that big city countdown. Read the official entry and waiting-area guidance rather than treating it like a casual walk-up stop.
a hilltop clock tower
I love the gold-lit walls and clock tower rising above the crowd below. The huge bursts overhead make the whole scene look especially dramatic.
The exact location isn’t clear from this image, so keep it as inspiration for a historic-city celebration rather than a confirmed destination. You’d want to identify the landmark before planning around this view.
Rio’s beach celebration
Want to go all out by the sea? This Copacabana scene gives you plenty of inspiration.
Fireworks stretch across the water while crowds fill the beach beside the wave-patterned promenade.
I especially love the orange reflections on the ocean. For a Rio trip, choose your viewing area and plan your return journey together.
Reykjavík around Hallgrímskirkja
This Reykjavík scene may just be one of my favorites here. Hallgrímskirkja rises beside colorful fireworks, with people gathered across the snowy square.
If you like the idea of a winter city break, this is a lovely starting point. Plan your outdoor clothing around the forecast, not just the pretty picture.
bright lights in Las Vegas
An Eiffel Tower and a glowing balloon sign in the same view? That’s Las Vegas!
The replica tower shines above a street packed with people, with fireworks appearing between the buildings.
Try this destination if bright lights are a big part of your wish list. I’d choose accommodation with the evening’s road closures in mind.
Dubai’s towering skyline
I am obsessed with the reflections in this Dubai scene. The Burj Khalifa rises above illuminated fountain jets, with colorful bursts filling the sky around it.
If this is the view you’re hoping for, check the current arrangements for the surrounding viewing areas. A nearby booking doesn’t automatically mean an unobstructed view.
London beside the Thames
Calling all London lovers, this is such a pretty countdown scene. Pink fireworks spread around the London Eye while the illuminated clock face of Elizabeth Tower stands out on the right.
Make the riverside your starting point for planning. Check official ticketing and access information before choosing where you’ll spend midnight.
golden lights in Paris
Who needs fireworks in every picture when you have lights like these? The Champs-Élysées is lined with glowing trees, leading toward a blue-lit Arc de Triomphe.
I love the gold and blue together. Save Paris if a grand avenue and a lively crowd sound more like your night than a beach party.
Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate looks gorgeous under all those orange and gold bursts. I especially love how clearly the sculpture on top stands out against the sky.
For a Berlin countdown, look up the current event arrangements around the gate. Use this scene to pick the setting you like, not to assume the same display will happen every year.
Cape Town’s waterfront by day
Don’t want your whole trip to revolve around midnight? This Cape Town waterfront picture is a lovely reminder to plan the daytime part too.
A white observation wheel rises above the busy promenade and waterside buildings.
This is a daytime holiday scene, not a New Year’s Eve event photo. I’d use it as inspiration for a waterfront stroll during your stay.
Prague’s festive square
How pretty is this square? The illuminated tree and decorated stalls sit beneath the pointed towers of Prague’s Church of Our Lady before Týn.
If festive streets are high on your list, save this one. Check the market dates for your trip rather than assuming every stall will still be open on New Year’s Eve.
fireworks across the water
I am obsessed with those gold reflections. This picture shows a silhouetted person at the water’s edge, with fireworks filling almost the entire sky.
The location isn’t identifiable here, but the waterfront setting is worth saving. For your own trip, look for a designated shore viewing area rather than planning to watch from the water.

Tokyo’s temple and tower
The rows of little golden lights are my favorite part of this Tokyo scene. A temple building sits beside the brightly lit Tokyo Tower, with colorful fireworks pictured overhead.
Save this for the mix of traditional architecture and city lights. Verify the actual temple access and celebration schedule before expecting this exact scene on December 31.
Barcelona’s blue fountain lights
If you love an illuminated city view, this Barcelona picture is for you. Blue fountain jets sit below the Palau Nacional, with beams of light spreading behind its dome.
There aren’t any fireworks in this image, but it’s still gorgeous. Check current fountain operations and local event plans if you want to include this area in your evening.
a riverside skyline
Sometimes the reflections are just as pretty as the fireworks. Here, gold bursts hang above a row of illuminated buildings, with long streaks of color across the water.
The small image doesn’t give enough detail to confirm the city. Keep this as a riverside travel idea until the original location can be verified.
a snowy slope countdown
Want something completely different from a city square? This snowy slope is lit pink beneath the fireworks, with small groups watching near the bottom and trees lining the hill.
The resort isn’t identifiable from the picture. Once you choose a ski destination, check whether it has an organized New Year’s Eve display and a designated spectator area.
Hong Kong’s glowing harbor
I love the orange sails against Hong Kong’s blue evening skyline. The boat and its reflection bring so much color to this harbor view without a single firework in sight.
If being beside the water is enough to make your evening, save this one. A harbor cruise could be an option, but check its route and holiday arrangements before booking.
Copenhagen’s festive stalls
This Copenhagen scene is so pretty with its red stalls and rows of little lights. Christiansborg Palace rises behind the square while people wander between the market roofs.
Use this as inspiration for the holiday atmosphere rather than a confirmed December 31 activity. Check market closing dates if those stalls are part of what makes you want to visit.
a beachside evening
Last but definitely not least, we have this beach celebration with low tables and red seating arranged on the sand. I love the golden fireworks above the shoreline!
The venue and destination aren’t clear from the image. If this is your favorite kind of night, look for a verified beach event with reserved seating and clear transport information.
