Looking for camping activities for adults that go beyond sitting outside your tent? Think lake paddles, card games and dinner around the fire.
These ideas include things to do with your whole group plus a few quieter ways to enjoy a little time to yourself.
You can keep it simple or plan a bigger outing. Pack a book, bring a favorite game or leave room for an afternoon on the trail. You don’t have to fill every minute!
Camping activities worth making time for
a night around the campfire
We’re starting off with a camping classic. Everyone is stretched out around a small fire here, with the dark sky overhead.
Sometimes this is all you need for the evening.
Bring a few conversation prompts or take turns telling stories. Where fires are allowed, use an established fire ring and put the fire out completely before bed.
paddleboarding with a view
How gorgeous is this lake? The two turquoise boards sit beneath a huge mountain backdrop. I’d leave plenty of time to take in that view.
Try a beginner-friendly paddle with your camping buddy. Wear a properly fitted life jacket and check the water conditions before heading out.
campsite margaritas
If you are looking for a little campsite happy-hour inspiration, this one is for you. The pictured margarita has a pale green color, a lime slice and a white-coated rim.
Bring the ingredients for your favorite version, or make yours alcohol-free with lime and sparkling water. Save alcoholic drinks until the day’s driving and outdoor activities are finished.
fly fishing by the trees
Want an activity you can take your time with? This angler is holding a fly rod in a rocky stream, with a landing net carried behind her.
Book a beginner lesson if you’re new to fly fishing. Check local licenses and fishing rules before choosing your spot.
cards at the picnic table
Don’t want to pack lots of equipment? No problem!
A card game and a picnic table give you a simple afternoon plan. The red cards are already spread out here.
For your list of camping activities for adults ideas, start with a game your group already knows. You can get straight to playing instead of spending the whole break reading rules.
yoga with a mountain backdrop
I love the golden sky behind this tree pose. The mountain silhouettes make the whole scene so pretty.
Take inspiration from the stretch rather than the rocky perch. Choose level ground away from drop-offs and try a few poses you already know.

dinner over the fire
Who else would plan an evening around this dinner? The big black pot holds browned sausage slices, potatoes, peppers and onions, with a serving spoon ready to go.
Choose a campfire recipe before your trip and split the prep between your group. Cooking together can be part of the fun, not just the job before everyone eats.
a book in the hammock
Don’t want to go anywhere for a while? This hammock-and-book combination is for you. I love the leafy view beyond the open pages.
Pack the book you’ve been meaning to start. Use tree-friendly straps where hammocks are permitted, then give yourself permission to stay on the same chapter for a bit.
a forest hike with friends
This misty forest trail is such a beautiful change from hanging around camp. The hikers have backpacks and walking poles as they make their way over the rocks.
Choose a marked route that suits everyone in your group. Bring water and an offline map, especially if you’re heading somewhere unfamiliar.
an outdoor movie night
I am obsessed with this little outdoor cinema. The movie is projected onto a hanging white screen, with string lights running between the trees.
Try a version at a campsite that allows projectors and respects quiet hours. Download your movie beforehand and keep any screen, cords or overhead cover well away from flames.
a round of cornhole
A little friendly competition, anyone? This lawn setup has a white cornhole board and bright red tossing bags.
It’s a fun idea to borrow for a campsite with enough open space.
Pair up for a small tournament or skip the scoring and take turns. Leave plenty of room between your game and neighboring sites.
a closer look at forest plants
There’s plenty to notice when you slow down. Here, someone crouches beside a moss-covered fallen trunk with a basket nearby.
Try a plant-identification walk or join a qualified foraging guide. A basket isn’t proof that anything nearby is edible, so don’t taste plants or mushrooms without expert identification and permission to collect.
kayaking across the lake
This lake view may just be my favorite one here. The red paddle rests across the kayak, with snowy peaks visible between the dark mountains.
If you prefer sitting to standing on a board, consider a guided kayak outing. Keep your life jacket on and choose a route that matches your experience.
sketching under the trees
How sweet is this little drawing setup? There’s a tree sketch in the open notebook, with colored pencils scattered across a blue-and-white checked blanket.
Bring a small sketchbook and pick one thing to draw. A leaf or a crooked branch is plenty to start with. It doesn’t have to look perfect.
a ghost-themed hunt
Want something a little silly for game night? This Ghost Hunters game image pairs little ghost illustrations with marshmallows on the grass.
The picture doesn’t show the rules, but the theme is cute.
For your own version, hide reusable ghost tokens within an agreed area and have everyone search for them. Count them back in afterward rather than leaving food or game pieces outdoors.
a creekside photo walk
The green canopy and reflections make this creek a lovely photo spot. The person pictured is hanging from a fallen trunk above the water, but you don’t need to copy that pose.
Make your own photo challenge from stable ground instead. Try capturing a reflection, an interesting branch and your favorite patch of sunlight.
a toast with a view
Those golden trees and mountain peaks are gorgeous. Two raised glasses and hiking boots fill the foreground, keeping this little break simple.
Plan a scenic toast once you’re settled for the day. Bring reusable cups and your favorite drink, with an alcohol-free option for anyone who wants one.
a bike ride through the woods
If you’d rather explore on two wheels, this one is for you. The two riders have stopped beside a rustic fence, with their bikes on a leafy woodland path.
Find a trail where cycling is permitted and choose a distance you both want to ride. Make sure everyone wears their helmet before setting off again.
a waterfall picnic
Lunch with a waterfall in the background? Yes, please!
This scene has two chairs facing the water, a basket of vegetables and food on a grill in the foreground.
Borrow the picnic idea at a designated spot rather than assuming you can camp or build a fire beside any waterfall. I’d bring a ready-to-eat lunch and let the view be the main attraction.
ladder toss on the grass
Last but definitely not least, we have a ladder-toss setup. Red and white ball pairs hang from the three rails of the white frame.
Bring a set if your campsite has room for lawn games. Take turns tossing from a marked line and keep the area behind the target clear.
