Looking for places to visit in north carolina? Start with mountain overlooks, a black-and-white lighthouse or a waterfront lined with sailboats.
These photos give you plenty to choose from, whether you want a mountain-town afternoon or a few days by the coast.
If your planning notes are still titled “north carolina travel places to visit,” here’s a little help narrowing things down. Some views revisit the same destination, while a few show scenery without an identifiable location. Check current access before building your trip around a particular stop.
North Carolina stops and scenery worth saving
fall colors and mountain stairs
We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous mountain view. I love the orange leaves around the stairs and those layers of blue ridges stretching into the distance.
If fall scenery is your main reason for going, save this as inspiration for a mountain overlook stop. The exact staircase isn’t identifiable from this photo alone.
Biltmore’s grand front lawn
How beautiful is Biltmore? The steep roof, tall chimneys and rows of arched windows give you so much to look at before you even get close.
I especially love the mountains behind the house. Leave room in your plans to appreciate the grounds rather than making the building your only focus.
Cape Lookout Lighthouse
I am obsessed with the black-and-white diamonds on Cape Lookout Lighthouse. That bright blue-green water makes the whole scene even prettier.
If this is going on your itinerary, check boat transportation and current visitor access first. The lighthouse and surrounding shoreline deserve a little planning rather than a last-minute detour.
ladders along the rock face
Want something a little more adventurous than a roadside overlook? This photo shows hikers working their way along a steep rock face with a ladder and fixed cable.
The mountain backdrop is gorgeous, but this isn’t a casual walking-path scene. Confirm the route and its difficulty before deciding whether it belongs on your list.
Wilmington’s riverfront
If you’re looking for a waterfront stroll, Wilmington’s Riverwalk is a lovely idea to save. The boardwalk runs beside the water, with curved lamps and yellow buildings along the other side.
I love the flower-filled patio beside the path. You could leave this part of your day open for a walk and a meal rather than scheduling every minute.
Chimney Rock’s flag-topped overlook
This Chimney Rock view may just be one of my favorites here. The flag stands above the rocky platform, with forest and Lake Lure stretching out behind it.
Before making this your main stop, check official updates for current park and overlook access. A photo shows the view, not whether the route is open for your dates.
sand dunes and open sky
Don’t want to fill every day with attractions? No problem! This dune scene is a pretty reminder to leave some room for the coast itself.
I love the ripples in the sand and the little stretches of fence between the grasses. Use designated beach access paths rather than walking across protected dunes.
Raleigh beneath the string lights
How pretty is this evening view of Raleigh? The glowing skyline looks so good beneath those crisscrossed string lights.
If you want a city evening between your outdoor stops, look for a rooftop with a skyline view. You’ll need to confirm the venue separately, since the photo doesn’t identify it.

a waterfall framed by fall leaves
This is another lovely reason to consider a fall trip. The waterfall drops over a broad rock ledge, with yellow leaves scattered through the shallow water below.
The leaf-covered foreground is my favorite part. Save the scenery as inspiration, but confirm the waterfall’s location before choosing a trail.
downtown Boone in fall
I am obsessed with the hillside behind downtown Boone. All that orange and gold sits right above the storefronts!
If you want to mix mountain scenery with a town stop, this is a lovely combination to aim for. Plan a downtown wander alongside your outdoor plans, keeping in mind that fall color varies.
a colorful coastal surf shop
How cute are those turquoise shutters? The upright surfboards, golf cart and colorful boats give this shopfront so much personality.
This is a fun kind of stop to look for during a coastal visit. The exact shop isn’t confirmed here, so treat the photo as inspiration rather than a verified rental recommendation.
Grandfather Mountain’s rocky peaks
If you are looking for a dramatic mountain backdrop, this one is for you. Grandfather Mountain’s rocky peaks rise above green and gold trees, with streaks of cloud overhead.
I love this view from below. You don’t have to build every mountain outing around reaching a summit.
golden light over the coastal water
Who wouldn’t want to pause for this view? The orange sky reflects across the water, with pale dunes and a long wooden walkway crossing the scene in front.

Leave a little unscheduled time near the shore if you want to enjoy changing light. There’s no need to turn every pretty moment into another activity.
Charlotte’s skyline and green space
This Charlotte view is such a pretty mix of city buildings and trees. I especially love the fountain and the curving water below the skyline.
If you’re choosing a city break, consider pairing an Uptown visit with time in a public park. You could enjoy both without making the whole day about indoor attractions.
a shopfront in Blowing Rock
Blowing Rock brings a different kind of mountain-town inspiration. This storefront has bright yellow trim, little birdhouses and plenty of colorful things tucked under the awning.
The ice cream cone is a pretty good suggestion for a browsing break too! Leave time to wander rather than treating town as just a stop on the way to a trail.
horses among the dunes
These horses standing among the dune grasses are beautiful. The pale sand and open sky keep your attention right on them.
North Carolina has coastal wild-horse viewing areas, though this photo doesn’t establish which one is shown. Choose a responsible viewing option and follow local distance rules. Never feed or approach the horses.
Linville Falls between the cliffs
If you love waterfalls with a dramatic setting, save Linville Falls. The white water pours between dark, layered cliffs into the pool below.

I’d choose a designated overlook for taking in this scene. Follow posted trail guidance rather than trying to copy the exact camera position.
sailboats and waterfront flowers
I love this waterfront with its tall sailboat masts and flower-filled planters. The colorful flags make it even prettier.
A harbor stroll is a lovely option for a slower afternoon. This photo doesn’t confirm the town, but it gives you a good idea of the kind of waterfront to look for.

garden paths and a little cabin
Don’t want every outdoor stop to involve a mountain trail? A garden visit is another lovely idea.
Here, leafy beds and tall plants surround a small cabin-style building.
I especially like the path winding beside the planting beds. Confirm the garden’s name and visitor information before adding this particular scene to your itinerary.
Chimney Rock from above
Last but definitely not least, we’re back at Chimney Rock from a different angle. You can see the long staircase beside the rock and the lake winding through the hills beyond.
This wider view shows more of the approach than the earlier photo. Save both views under the same destination rather than counting them as two separate stops.
