20+ Stunning Anniversary Decoration Ideas That Wow

Skip the intro · jump to the list ↓

Happy anniversary season, you guys! My calendar is basically one long string of dates I refuse to forget, lol! Every year I tell myself I’ll keep it simple. Every year I end up with balloons in three closets.

How could I possibly resist a reason to string up fairy lights and light a dozen candles? I can’t! It’s the one night where extra is somehow exactly right.

My neighbors host a little anniversary swap every fall where couples show off their setups and vote on a favorite. Last year the winning table had a floral hoop hanging over it. I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

Since anniversary season is only a couple of short weeks away for so many of us, I’ve gathered 20 adorable ideas the whole family will love helping with. Don’t fret if you’ve never decorated a single thing beyond a birthday cake.

From balloon arches to candlelit patios and paper lanterns, there’s at least one idea in here you’ll want to steal immediately. Under each one I’ve added the little details you actually want to know. There’s also a link to the full step-by-step below each one!

ANNIVERSARY DECORATION IDEAS

Balloon Arch With Gold Numbers

We start our anniversary party planning with a balloon arch topped with gold numbers. It makes an entryway feel like an event the second guests walk in.

Curve the balloons in clusters of three so the arch gets some texture. Keep the numbers front and center since that is the whole point. Gold cardstock numbers photograph best under warm light!

  • Photo op built in
  • Gold numbers catch every light in the room
  • Balloons hold their shape for a full weekend

Rose Petal Table Runner

A rose petal table runner turns a plain table into something out of a movie. She swears the petals make the whole room smell like a garden, haha! Fresh roses work best since they hold their color longer under candlelight. Who wouldn’t want their dining room smelling like a florist for a night?

  • Straight off a bridal shoot
  • Two dozen roses cover a six foot table
  • Petals stay fresh looking for hours

Fairy Light Backdrop Wall

How cute is a fairy light backdrop wall? String hundreds of tiny lights across a wall or curtain. Suddenly every photo taken in front of it looks professional.

The warm glow does most of the work honestly. Even my worst phone photos look decent against it!

  • Instagram magnet
  • Curtain lights drape in under ten minutes
  • Warm white bulbs beat cool white every time

Hanging Paper Lantern Display

Paper lanterns hanging in clusters give a party a soft floaty feeling. I once tried matching them to a theme and ended up buying way too many colors. They come in nearly every shade, so that mistake is easy to make. My closet still has three bags I never used.

  • Floats above everything
  • Battery lights tucked inside each lantern
  • Craft store variety pack covers every color

Photo Timeline Banner Garland

A photo timeline banner garland is basically a love story you can hang from string. Clip photos from the first date all the way to now along a ribbon.

This one always gets guests standing around it the longest at every party I’ve hosted. It tells the whole story without anyone having to explain a single thing. Who doesn’t love that?

  • The conversation piece
  • Mini clothespins hold photos without tape
  • Works with printed or instant camera photos

Candlelit Outdoor Patio Setup

A candlelit outdoor patio setup feels fancy without needing an actual venue. Rows of votive candles along the railing and table do most of the heavy lifting here. I always add a few lanterns on the ground once the sun goes down. The whole patio ends up looking like a tiny restaurant nobody else knows about, lol!

  • Backyard upgrade
  • Votives line a railing in twenty minutes
  • Citronella keeps bugs away without ruining the mood

Floral Hoop Centerpiece Display

It really does steal the whole room. A wire hoop wrapped in greenery and flowers hangs low over the table.

Are you guys seeing how full this looks? It’s honestly less work than it appears, since the greenery covers most of the wire.

  • The showstopper piece
  • Eucalyptus fills gaps for almost nothing
  • Hangs from a single ceiling hook

Mason Jar Fairy Lights

Looking for simple these that still feel special? Mason jars with fairy lights tucked inside are the answer. I keep a stash of these jars in my closet for exactly this reason. The whole space glows without a single plug in sight, which still feels like magic to me!

  • Basic and proud
  • Battery lights fit any jar size
  • Thrift store jars work just as well

Simple Heart Balloon Cluster

Who says a centerpiece needs to be complicated? A simple heart shaped balloon cluster does the trick in half an hour. I threw one together last minute once. It still got compliments all night. Turns out nobody checks how long a centerpiece actually took, lol!

  • Dollar store win
  • Balloon tape keeps the heart shape steady
  • Ribbon curls finish the look fast

Minimalist White Candle Arrangement

A minimalist white candle arrangement is for anyone who wants elegant without the fuss. Group candles of different heights down the center of a table. Let the flames do everything else.

This is the setup I go back to when I don’t have time for anything elaborate. It never fails to look put together. Three sizes of candles is really all it takes!

  • easy and elegant
  • Taper and pillar candles mixed together
  • White wax hides drips better than colored

Memory Jar Filled Notes

A memory jar filled with little notes is one of the sweetest 1 year anniversary ideas out there. Fill the jar with folded notes about favorite memories from the past year. Either way it turns into a tearful, happy mess, lol! If you were hunting for 1year anniversary ideas, this one is a keeper!

  • The keepsake that lasts
  • Folded notes fit any size jar
  • Colored paper makes each memory pop

Scrapbook Of First Year

A scrapbook of the first year together makes an incredible gift and decoration in one. Ticket stubs, photos and little doodles all get a page. It still sits on her coffee table years later. That is the real test of whether a decoration was worth it, am I right?

  • A whole year, one book
  • Washi tape adds color without glue mess

Paper Anniversary Themed Gift Table

Is it really a first anniversary without paper? Traditionally that’s the theme. A paper anniversary gift table celebrates it perfectly.

Fill the table with paper flowers, origami hearts and a card or two. Not that I’m particular about tradition, but this one’s fun to follow, haha!

  • Tradition, but pretty
  • Origami hearts fold in five minutes
  • Paper flowers hold up better than fresh ones

Rooftop Candlelight Dinner Setup

Talk about a view! A rooftop candlelight dinner setup turns any rooftop, even a small apartment one, into date night gold. String a few lights along the railing. Set candles down the middle of a small table. The skyline does the rest of the decorating for free!

  • City view included
  • Battery candles handle wind better than real flame
  • Fold up table works on any rooftop

Picnic Basket Sunset Dinner

Among all the anniversary dinner ideas out there, a picnic basket sunset dinner might be the most romantic. Pack cheese, bread and fruit into a basket and head somewhere with a view. I always forget a bottle opener and end up using a house key, lol! A blanket, pillows and string lights on a portable stand finish the whole look.

  • Golden hour, guaranteed
  • Wicker basket keeps everything cold enough

Elegant Indoor Dinner Table

An elegant indoor dinner table feels like a private restaurant reservation without leaving the house. Linen napkins, tall glasses and low candles set the whole tone. My guests notice the details more than the food half the time. Apparently that is what actually gets remembered!

  • Restaurant at home
  • Cloth napkins upgrade any plain table
  • Low candles keep the view clear

Backyard String Light Dinner

Hang lights between two trees or posts and set a table right underneath.

The whole yard glows once it gets dark. Somehow that makes even takeout feel fancy. Fair warning, neighbors will ask where you got the lights, lol!

  • Backyard glow up
  • Works with folding tables in a pinch

Mini Cake With Candle

A mini cake with a single candle is one of the cutest 1 month anniversary ideas around. Bake or buy a small round cake and stick one candle right in the center. This one’s gone in about two bites, every time.

  • Small cake, big feeling
  • One candle says plenty on its own

Handwritten Love Note Jar

A handwritten love note jar is simple, sweet and takes maybe ten minutes to put together. I scribbled mine at the kitchen table while dinner was burning slightly. Every note is just a small reason the first month was great. It always ends up read twice before the jar even gets closed. Not in my book would anyone skip a second read!

  • Small jar fits a dozen folded notes
  • Handwriting makes it feel personal instantly

Balloon Number One Photo

Last but definitely not least, we have a balloon number one photo setup. A giant number one balloon makes for the sweetest one month photo opportunity.

Prop it against a wall, add a few smaller balloons around the base and snap the picture. Simple, sweet and gone from the living room within a week. Kids love popping them, haha!

  • The number says it all
  • Smaller balloons fill in the empty space
