Staring at your camera roll with zero idea what to actually shoot? Too many options and somehow none of them feel right. Same!
This list exists so you don’t have to scroll for another hour trying to figure out a decent pose or angle.
I went through hundreds of pins looking for shots that were doable without a professional camera. No second person holding reflectors needed either.
The ones that made the cut are simple, they look good in real life and most need nothing but your phone.
Some of these lean beachy, some lean cozy and a few even wander into city streets. There’s something here no matter your mood.
Scroll through, save your favorites and pick a few to try this year. Easy as that!
SEA PICTURES IDEAS
Silhouette Walking Along Shoreline
We’re starting off strong with a classic silhouette shot along the shoreline. I always shoot straight into the sunset so my outline goes fully dark against all that orange.
Roll your pants up and just walk, no posing needed, because forcing a pose ruins it. It reads candid every single time. Honestly the messier the walk looks, the better it turns out, lol!
- Golden hour only
- Works on any beach
- Phone camera is plenty
Ocean Waves Crashing Rocks
Ocean waves crashing against rocks make for such a dramatic shot. Are you guys seeing how much movement a slow shutter adds to plain old water?
Get low near the rocks but not too close, because that spray comes in fast. Not that I learned that the hard way or anything, haha!
- Bring a towel just in case
- Great with cloudy skies too
- No fancy lens required
Toes In Wet Sand
Toes in wet sand is one of those shots that looks easy but takes three tries to get right. I always blame the waves for my bad timing. Honestly it’s just me. The wet shine on the sand does most of the work.
Wiggle your feet a little right before the wave pulls back for that glossy reflection. Works every single time!
Seashell Collection Flat Lay
A seashell collection flat lay is basically free content if you’ve got a beach bag full of shells sitting around. I end up borrowing his stash every time I need props.
Arrange them by size on a neutral towel. Somehow his pile always outshines whatever I collected myself, lol!
- Free souvenirs count
- Best with morning light
- A linen towel as backdrop
Beach Picnic Ocean View
Who doesn’t love a good beach picnic shot, am I right? A striped blanket, a cooler, some fruit and suddenly it looks like a whole vacation.
Shoot from above so the ocean sneaks into the top of the frame. It ties the whole picnic to the view instead of looking random. Grapes and a baguette always sneak into my frame somehow.
- Snacks double as props
- Overhead angle works best
- Bring a blanket with pattern
Skier Jumping Snowy Mountain
Ski pictures ideas usually start with the big jump shot and honestly, it never gets old. A skier mid air against all that white snow just looks unreal.
You need a friend with decent timing on the shutter button for this one. Someone always ends up faceplanting before the good shot happens, haha!
- Timing matters more than gear
- A friend as photographer helps
- Best on bluebird days
Skis Planted In Snow
Skis planted upright in fresh snow make such a peaceful looking shot. It’s the resting moment between runs. My legs are usually screaming with relief by then, so the stillness feels earned.
Angle the skis so the mountain peeks out behind them, since that quiet pause reads better than the run itself. Somehow it always beats the action shots. How peaceful does that look?
Cozy Cabin After Skiing
A cozy cabin shot after a full day of skiing is basically comfort in picture form. Thick socks, a mug of cocoa and rosy cheeks tell the whole story without a single word.
The fireplace glow in the background adds warmth that outdoor shots just can’t match!
- Window light plus firelight
- A mug as your prop
- Wool socks look extra cozy
Coffee Cup Aesthetic Flatlay
Insta pictures ideas almost always include a good coffee cup flat lay. There’s a reason it never dies out. My coffee is always cold by the time I finish setting it up. Steam, latte art and a moody table make a strong little scene.
This shot demands patience I clearly do not have, since the steam vanishes fast. Worth chasing anyway, lol!
- Steam only shows up in the cold
- Latte art is optional
Mirror Selfie Neutral Outfit
The mirror selfie in a neutral outfit is basically the internet’s uniform at this point. My closet is somehow all beige now. I blame this exact trend. Beige, cream and white all photograph so clean against a plain wall.
Keep the phone low so it does not block the whole outfit. My arm always shakes right when it counts, haha!
Behind The Scenes Snapshot
Story ideas pictures don’t need to be perfect. That’s kind of the whole point. My messy setup gets more comments than the polished shot ever does. A behind the scenes snapshot works because it feels unfiltered.
Snap the tangled cords or the half eaten snack nearby before the actual shot. People love the process more than the result, apparently more than they love me!
Poll Sticker Question Prompt
A poll sticker question prompt is such an easy way to fill a slow story day. My go-to is coffee or tea. I still lose that debate every time. Ask something small and watch the responses roll in.
This one takes zero effort but keeps people tapping through the whole story. Cheap trick, works every time!
Red Phone Booth Pose
London pictures ideas pretty much have to include the red phone booth pose. It’s a total cliche, but tourists line up for it constantly because it just works. I have three near identical photos from three different trips.
Step back a little so the whole booth fits in frame. My biggest mistake was always cropping the top clean off, lol!
- The line moves fast usually
- Bright colors pop against red
Tower Bridge Golden Hour
Tower Bridge at golden hour is one of those views that looks fake until you see it in person. The light hits the stone towers and turns everything a warm honey color. My camera roll ended up half sunset shots from that exact spot.
Show up about thirty minutes before actual sunset to catch the sky changing colors. Every single time it is worth the wait. Who wouldn’t wait for a sky like that?
Umbrella Walk Rainy Street
An umbrella walk on a rainy London street sounds like a downside turned into a photo op. Honestly it is. My umbrella always turns inside out at the worst possible moment. Wet pavement reflects the streetlights in the prettiest way.
Grab a bright umbrella so it pops against all that gray. Not exactly complicated, lol!
- Rain is basically a filter
- A red umbrella pops most
Cap And Gown Toss
Senior pictures ideas almost always end with the cap and gown toss. It’s honestly earned its spot. My first attempt landed the cap directly on my face. There’s something about a flying cap that just screams celebration.
Toss it a few times to get the shot right, since the first attempt rarely lands. No shame in that. How cute is that flying cap against a clear sky?
- Multiple tosses guaranteed
- Burst mode saves the day
- Works on any lawn or field
Varsity Jacket Football Field
A varsity jacket shot on the football field brings a whole different kind of nostalgia. My old jacket still smells like the locker room somehow. The stadium lights or empty bleachers in the background do a lot of the storytelling.
Wear the jacket even if it is a little warm out, since it reads as intentional. Nostalgia always beats comfort in the end!
Flat Lay Book Stack
Instagram ideas pictures often circle back to the book stack flat lay. It’s an easy one to recreate on a lazy afternoon. Stack a few titles, add a candle or a mug and you’re basically done.
This is the shot I steal every time my coffee table looks halfway decent, haha!
- Uses books you already own
- A candle adds warmth
Rooftop Skyline Sunset Shot
Last but definitely not least, we have the rooftop skyline sunset shot for pictures ideas instagram lovers everywhere. City lights just starting to flicker on against a pink sky never misses. Who could resist that view?
Get there early enough to grab a good spot before the crowd shows up. Worth the wait, every single time!
- Blue hour beats full dark
- Wide shots capture more skyline
